Canoe Kids Instructor
The Canoe Kids instructors will take direction from and report to the Program Coordinator and Head Coach. Instructors will facilitate a full day Monday to Friday camp, providing instruction in various boat and paddling skills to camp participants. Camps will run through July and August, hours of work will be between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday to Friday.
Responsibilities:
- Provide positive reinforcement, encourage fun and maintain a controlled safe environment for camp participants.
- Ensure safety protocols are always followed (staff-athlete ratios, life jacket, motorboat use etc.)
- Teach and remind paddlers of safety precautions regularly including the use of sun screen.
- Ensure paddlers learn the basics of paddling, steering, and safely using non motorized boats (canoes/kayaks/paddle boards), following Canoe Kayak Canada’s Canoe Kids program guidelines.
- Supervise and engage participants in all aspects of the camp, including swim assessments, canoeing, kayaking, dragon boating, outdoor games and indoor activities during bad weather which prevents on-water activities.
- Professionally engage with parents of participants and provide feedback as required.
- Assist with Special Needs athletes and programs
- Collaborate and promote an inclusive team environment free of bullying or harassment with other NBCC Instructors, Coaches and administrative staff.
- Must be vigilant and aware of any incidents or behavior which are in breach of the NBCC Code of Conduct and follow the required NBCC reporting & documentation processes for each occurrence.
- Promote and encourage participants and parents to continue in the sport, joining Intro to Sprint and the Sprint Racing program
- Set up and put away boats and equipment.
Requirements:
- Must have canoe/kayak experience, preferably in Sprint Racing.
- Must be 15 years old as of July 2, 2024
- CKC Community Coach Certification (ELCC would be an asset, course can be taken prior to the start of the season)
- Attend in-house or other additional training as directed and or recommended by Head Coach
- Ability to work with young paddlers individually and in group
- Must demonstrate leadership attributes and or be willing to learn and be coached to become a leader.
- CPR, Standard First Aid certification
- Pleasure craft operator card
- Acceptable criminal background check
- Bilingualism is an asset but not required
- Experience working with intellectually challenged individuals would be an asset
