Sprint Canoe and Kayak Racing

The North Bay Canoe Club (NBCC) offers several Sprint Canoe and Kayak racing programs for athletes aged 8 and up.

The U10/U12/U14 programs provide instruction and training for beginners and developing paddlers in the Olympic sport of flatwater canoe-kayak.  Participants will have the opportunity to compete at regional regattas (races) across eastern Ontario and could qualify for Provincial Championships each summer. Regattas are held in the summer on weekends, generally in the Ottawa area, with one regatta in North Bay each year.

The U16+ programs provide ongoing training and technique development for athletes wishing to compete at regional regattas, with the opportunity to qualify for Provincial, national and international championships as they progress.

For athletes 14 and older who can no longer commit to daily practices but still want to continue in the sport, we have introduce an Youth Team Boat program that practices two evenings per week.

More details about all these racing programs can be found below.

The U10/U12/U14 Summer Sprint Racing programs run from the beginning of July to the End of August, with several full and part-time options available to fit into families' summer plans. Parents can opt to register for Full Days, Monday to Friday, 1/2 days, Monday to Friday or Full Days, 3 days per week. Parents can further choose between Full Summer (up to 8 weeks) or Half Summer (up to 4 weeks) participation for any of those three programs.  Participation at regattas is encouraged (it's fun!) but not mandatory.

All coaches are certified in First Aid, Boating Safety, Safe Sport, and Canoe-Kayak coaching. Their focus is on teaching racing technique, improving balance, and age-appropriate athletic training that follows Long Term Athlete Development principles. The goal is to develop canoe kayak racing skills and confidence while having a great time in a safe and supportive environment.

NBCC also offers year-round, off-season programs for children in this age group wishing to continue paddling in the Fall, get started early in the Spring, improving their strength and fitness in the Winter or all of the above.
