These programs are suited for both novice and experienced athletes alike. Activities include on-water practices per day, running, soccer, outdoor games, and body weight strength training with plenty of water and sunscreen breaks mixed in.
Paddlers will learn about water safety rules and how to balance, paddle, and race in sprint kayaks and canoes. Each session they will do a warmup, practice/work out, and cool down.
Although Sprint Racing is a competitive program, NBCC recognizes that younger athletes may not feel ready for competition at first and parents may be reluctant to commit several summer weekends to the sport, regatta participation is encouraged but not mandatory. However, coaches need to prepare practices, crews and race entries throughout the summer so NBCC needs to know whether the paddler plans to compete or not at the time of registration. U10 athletes are generally not entered in regattas unless requested; U12 athletes typically compete at 2-3 regattas per year including one in North Bay. U14 Athletes compete at those same U12 regattas but can also attend additional U16 events in Ontario and National Championships. See the Regattas page for more details about regatta dates and locations.
The Registration fee for this program covers:
- Program delivery (coaching, use of facilities and equipment)
- Canoe Kayak Canada, Canoe Kayak Ontario and Eastern Ontario Division (EOD) affiliation fees
- Entry fees for all regattas
- Insurance costs
- Small Ice Cream at Green Store on Fridays of non-regatta weeks
NOTE: Any Canoe Kids or Intro to Sprint fees paid will be deducted from the Full Day, Monday - Friday, program fee if the Full Summer option is selected.
